Step back. See the system clearly. Ask what's getting in the way. Find a better way forward.

When everyone is running, sometimes you need a space to step off the wheel.

The problems that keep coming back aren't people problems.

You've retrained.

You've documented the corrective action.

You've closed it out.

And it came back.

So you add another training. Another policy. Another checkpoint.

Everyone is working harder. Everyone is doing exactly what the system asks.

And yet, you're still not getting where you're trying to go.

The natural response is to look at the person closest to the problem.

But what if we're asking the wrong question?

What's getting in the way?

The wheels keep turning

Your people aren't failing.

They're doing exactly what they've been asked to do.

But a system can keep people incredibly busy without actually moving them forward.

So we ask them to run faster.

Pay closer attention.

Try harder.

Add another runner.

And the wheel keeps turning.

Not because your people don't care.

Because the system itself has become misaligned with the outcome it's supposed to achieve.

I’ve stood where you are standing

I’m Julie Freidhoff, MS, MLS(ASCP).

I've spent more than 25 years working across laboratory medicine, quality, education, and professional development. My experience spans medical and reference laboratories, research, food manufacturing, and pharmaceutical manufacturing, including quality systems management and continuous improvement.

I've been at the bench, in the classroom, and within the systems responsible for quality, compliance, and performance. I understand the pressure of meeting standards while supporting the people responsible for delivering them.

As the founder of SafeSpace Coaching and Consulting, I bring together my experience in quality improvement, education, relational neuroscience, human factors, and wellbeing to help healthcare professionals and organizations create conditions where people can do their best work.

I'm a national speaker, published author, educator, and certified Health and Wellness Coach. I hold Mayo Quality Fellow and Mayo Equity Fellow credentials and have been recognized with Mayo Clinic's Academic Delivery Team of the Year Award.

I understand what it's like to work inside complex systems.

And sometimes, the people inside the system are too busy running to see what is getting in their way.

That's where I come in.

The Space Between the Person and the Problem.

I create a space between the person and the problem.

A space to pause.

A space to step off the wheel.

A space to look at the whole system.

A space to ask:

What's getting in the way?

What is this system actually asking people to do?

And is that actually going to get us where we're trying to go?

That is SafeSpace.

How I Work

Create the Space

We pause long enough to see what's actually happening.

Ask What’s Getting in the Way

We look at the conditions surrounding the work—not just the person closest to the problem.

Realign the System

We identify where the system has become misaligned with the outcome and find a better way forward.

Sometimes You Don't Need More Runners.

You need someone who can step off the wheel with you.

I don't come in and tell your people to run differently.

I don't ask them to work harder.

I don't remove the standards, regulations, or accountability that matter.

I help you see what you couldn't see from the wheel.

And sometimes, when you step off and look around, you discover something you couldn't see while you were running.

The escalator.

A different path.

The Exhale

Imagine what becomes possible when you stop running in circles.

The work is still important.

The standards still matter.

The accountability is still there.

But your people have room to think.

Room to speak.

Room to solve problems.

Room to use their expertise.

Problems stay solved.

Work moves off one set of shoulders and onto a team that can hold it.

You stop bracing.

The protector gets to rest.

And good work becomes something your whole team can grow—and give away.
